A Car Trip to the Cliffs of Moher

Cliffs of Moher

One of the advantages of travelling through Ireland by car is that you can go to places that you want to go to – on your own time and at your own pace. You don’t have to worry about following someone else’s schedule. Time is especially precious when you go to a place that you can only fully appreciate if you spend hours soaking in its natural beauty.

One such destination is the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare. Located near Burren, the Cliffs of Moher is one of the most spectacular sights in Ireland. The highest cliff stands 230 metres, and the entire range is roughly eight kilometres long. The Moher Cliffs offer one of the most amazing panoramic views in Ireland. On a very clear day, a visitor standing on top of the cliff can see the Aran Islands as well as Connemara with its valleys and hills.

South of the Cliffs of Moher is the Hag’s Head. These cliffs almost reach their highest point north of O’Brien’s Tower, which was built by Cornelius O’Brien. O’Brien was a descendant of Boru, and he built the tower with a singular purpose: to impress women. Another natural feature that’s worth seeing is the Breanan Mor, or the sea stack, which soars 70 metres above the churning surf below. Dress warmly if you plan on spending any time outside of your hire car, as cold winds blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean can make it chilly.
