A Car Trip to County Mayo

Croagh Patrick

If you are planning to explore County Mayo, it is best to set out with a hire car. There is plenty of scenery to admire in County Mayo, but those without a vehicle at their disposal may have trouble sorting the transportation needs. County Mayo is largely rural thanks to the fertile soil of the west coast. Behind the wheel of a rental car in Mayo County, you’ll encounter miles of farmland and quaint countryside.

Drivers will also encounter mountainous cliffs and peaks, contributing to County Mayo’s peaceful and picturesque landscape. If your car trip takes you inland, you’ll also see blanket bogs and two great lakes, Lough Conn and Lough Mask. The southern borders of County Mayo cross into the Connemara countryside of County Galway, famous for the beautiful scenery of Lough Mask, Doolough Valley and Killary Harbour. These are all easily accessible by car and are well worth visit.

The famous village of Cong, where the 1950s John Wayne classic The Quiet Man was filmed, is also just a short car trip away. Mayo’s county town of Castlebar, just a few miles’ car drive west of Westport, sits on the banks of Clew Bay. From there you can see Croagh Patrick, the legendary mountain from which St Patrick banished all the snakes from Ireland. In County Mayo, it’s also easy to drive to Knock, where a famous shrine commemorates an apparition of the Virgin Mary.

County Mayo doesn’t receive nearly as many tourists as its neighbours, which adds to its appeal. Guidebooks and brochures may undersell the region, but associates at car hire depots in Ireland are happy to supply advice, maps and relevant resources.
