Achill Island

Achill Island is situated on the West Coast of Ireland and can be reached by car from Knock Airport in just over 1 hour. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge, meaning you can freely drive on and off the island. It is in fact the largest Island in Ireland. Its rugged landscape features dramatic cliff faces, beautiful beaches and mountains. It is in fact one of the best destinations in Ireland for outdoor pursuits.

Things to do on Achill Island

Water Sports

With five blue flag beaches on the Island and being surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, it is a magnificent destination for surfers. Keel strand is one of the most popular surfing destinations in Ireland with instruction and equipment hire available.

Lough Keel is situated just off the Keel strand, and offers a safe environment for wind surfing. The lake measures 1km wide by 1.5km long and is again very accessible. You will find all manner of water sports being enjoyed here. Kite surfing lessons are also available.

Hill Walking

There are 15 mapped walking routes on Achill, all of which have individual maps and fact sheets available on Achill Tourism.com. These walks range from under 5km to 18km, and are designed to show off the very best of Achill. One of the great things about walking in Achill is that much of the land is in common ownership which means it is free to be explored.

Cycling

Achill is connected to Westport by the world-class Great Western Greeenway, a 42 km cycling route. The Greenway was built along the railway line built between Westport and Achill in 1890. The railway line remained in operation until 1937 when motor cars replaced the need for a railway connection. Along the greenway is a deserted village with between 80 and 100 cottages and the towns of Mulranny and Newport.
