About Glendalough

Glendalough

Glendalough, Co Wicklow

Glendalough, located in County Wicklow, attracts huge numbers of visitors for its beautiful scenery, rich history, archaeology and plentiful wildlife. Translated from Irish it means “valley of two lakes” and this is exactly what you’ll find amid Wicklow’s mountainous countryside. Its historical significance is that it was an early medieval monastic settlement founded in the 6th century.

The beauty and tranquillity found here is of the highest standard of the country, and it will become immediately apparent why monks settled here once you arrive. The valley is surrounded completely by forestry which encircles the two dark and mysterious lakes that offer up an image of the kind of rugged, romantic Ireland that draws people from all over the world.

The remains of the monastic settlement still stand strong today and tours are available by booking in advance. The structure dates back to the 6th century when it was founded by St. Kevin. It was then partly destroyed by English troops in 1398.

There are some other religious sites of note in the area as one can find a round tower, a cathedral, a reconstructed priest’s house, and many more small churches.

There are also a multitude of walking trails and rock climbing locations to be found in the Glendalough area catering for the more active outdoor visitors. 9 walking trails to choose from. The walks vary from a short half hour stroll to a long four hour hillwalk. Large maps of the walks are displayed at the Visitor Centre beside the Monastic City and on the Notice Board at the Upper Lake car park. All the walks start at the National Park Information Office near the Upper Lake. Each trail is signposted with colour-coded arrows.
