Athlone's Car hire depot is located west of the River Shannon among the town’s major business parks. It's found in Monksland at the Motorpark, which is about a kilometre north of the M6 on Route 362. From here, it's a short drive to hotels, restaurants and shops along the river.

Situated in the geographic centre of Ireland, Athlone Town is a busy town built on the banks of the River Shannon, Ireland's longest river. The Shannon divides the town in two, with the imposing Athlone Castle situated on the west bank of the River, and more modern developments on the East. Today Athlone is the major shopping destination for the midlands of Ireland with Athlone Town Centre being the focal point. A bridge to cross the Shannon was first built during the 12th Century, on a site that is currently 100 meters to the south of the current bridge. The fort built to protect the bridge evolved from a wooden structure to what is Athlone Castle today. Athlone was an extremely important strategic position as it was known as the gateway to the west and as such saw many battles throughout its time. There's a dedicated visitors centre on site that houses stories of the people and the battles that took place here over the centuries.

Athlone is an extremely popular place for pleasure craft cruising the River Shannon, with many boat hire companies having a base in Athlone itself. Visitors to Athlone will no doubt see plenty of boats docked in Shannon during the summer months. Tourist Attractions

Sean's Bar, located in the heart of Athlone town, is recognised as the oldest pub in Ireland and is awaiting confirmation as the oldest pub in the world. It dates back to the 10th century and is the perfect place to enjoy a pint while you consider how many thirsty travellers have done the same in these hallowed walls.

Locke's Distillery is the oldest continually licensed distillery in Ireland and is only a short drive from Athlone to Kilbeggan. There are tours available of this fantastic facility that has produced some of the best whiskey to come out of Ireland since 1757. The tour walks you through the intricate techniques used here and their evolution over the past few hundred years.

In the town of Mullingar, under an hours' drive from Athlone, you'll find the famous Mullingar Bronze and Pewter Studio. This facility has produced some of the finest Irish craftsmanship for the past 800 years is the perfect place to pick up a unique Irish souvenir. The guided tours on site will uncover the secrets, skills, and magic used to produce the beautiful pieces you’ll see throughout the studio.

County Westmeath has a huge amount of activities to keep even the most active of visitors happy throughout their stay. The many waterways offer up plenty of water sports including boating, sailing, canoeing, and much more. The region also boasts some great golf courses ranging in difficulty so no matter what your level you’ll find a course to suit you.
