Airport History

While the airport opened officially in 1940, due to World War II, it wasn’t until 1945 that scheduled flights were in operation. The first scheduled flight was between Dublin and London. The first transatlantic service between Dublin Airport and New York commenced service in 1958.

During the 1950s Aer Lingus took delivery of new aircraft. With passenger numbers increasing and wide-body aircraft in operation, a new terminal was required. Terminal 1 at Dublin Airport opened in 1972 and was capable of handling 5million passengers annually.

During the 1980s, routes in particular between Dublin and London grew, and in 1989 a new 2650 meter long runway and state of the art air traffic control tower was opened. Dublin Airport continued to grow rapidly during the 1990s with new piers added or existing piers extended. In 2007, Pier D opened with 14 gates served by budget airlines.

Dublin Airport Terminal 2 opened in 2010, with 19 air bridges and capacity for 15million additional passengers. All flights between Dublin Airport Ireland and the United States depart from Terminal 2, complete with the pre-clearance customs for US bound passengers. Aer Lingus is the largest operator in Terminal 2 with airlines such as Emirates and Etihad also operating from the terminal.
