Dublin South Tourist Information
Closer to our Dublin South rental centre, in Tallaght, you can find The Square – often just called Sq. – one of Ireland’s largest retail centres, which offers excellent shopping facilities and a 13-screen cinema. St. Maelruain's Church, a site of Christian worship for over twelve hundred years, is also in the town. The original monastery was founded by the Celtic saint, in the 8th century, and the four storey tower, now part of the present-day church, still stands.
Clondalkin, another nearby town, also features the Liffey Valley Shopping Centre, as well as one of the oldest and best-preserved round towers in the country. Built in the 8th century, is stands 26 metres (84 feet) tall and still has its original conical cap on the top.
Over in Drimnagh is the spectacular Drimnagh Castle that was, until 1954, the oldest continually inhabited castle in Ireland. Originally founded by the Norman knight Hugo de Bernivale, in the 13th century, what stands now is a fine example of a fully defensible, medieval fortress and the last castle in the land to be still surrounded by a moat. The grounds also include stables, coach houses and a fully restored and maintained, 17th century formal garden.
The, relatively speaking, more modern structure of the 16th century castle at Rathfarnham is another important site. Technically, it’s a fortified house rather than a castle and underwent an expensive and extravagant remodelling in the 18th century, with work done by famous architects including Sir William Chambers and James 'Athenian' Stuart.
Being based in the southern end of Dublin also allows easy access to one of Ireland’s most impressive natural features, the Wicklow Mountains and its national park. The source of the Dargle, Slaney, Avoca and Liffey rivers, and home to the spectacular Powerscourt Waterfall which, at 121 metres (397 feet), is the tallest in the country, the Wicklow Mountains are the largest continuous uplands in Ireland, and boast acres of heath and grasslands, home to merlin and peregrine falcons, dotted with 7000-year-old passage tombs and ancient monasteries, divided by deep valleys filled with thick woods and forests. Deer, feral goats, badgers and otters roam the area, along with walkers, hikers, climbers and cyclists, among the sheep grazing farms.
