The Boyne Valley
The Boyne Valley is an area rich in historical significance as it is home to over 3000 years of history. The area was hugely prominent throughout history as it was used by the High Kings of Ireland and was the site of the most famous battle ever fought on Irish soil, the Battle of the Boyne.
Arguably the top attraction in the Boyne Valley, and possibly the country, is the megalithic tomb of Newgrange. Here you'll find an impressive structure that predates Stonehenge and the Egyptian Pyramids. You'll be stunned by this incredible feat of engineering for its time and the information available on site about the man power and process involved. Even more impressive is the famous sunbox above the entrance door which illuminates the entire tomb each year at dawn on the winter solstice.
The Boyne Valley is where St. Patrick, Ireland's patron saint, first set out spreading the word of Christianity across Ireland. As such you'll find several monastic sites, magnificent abbeys and round towers dotted across the landscape.
The area was strategically important to the Normans and saw many contests between the invaders and the native Irish. This importance is reflected in the castle you'll find in the town of Trim. The structure dates back to the 12th century and is one of the best preserved Anglo-Norman castles in the world.
