Shannon Airport’s location gives you easy access to the entire south west of Ireland including the Ring of Kerry, Galway City and access to the Wild Atlantic Way.
Shannon Airport serves a wide range of routes including transatlantic flights to the United States, flights to most of the major European cities as well as seasonal routes to popular summer destinations such as the Canary Islands and the Algarve for example.
In 1936 the Government of Ireland put plans in place to develop a site as the country’s first transatlantic airport. It wasn’t until 1942 a serviceable airport had been established and named Shannon Airport. In 1945 the runways at the airport were then extended to allow for transatlantic flights to land.
Once World War 2 had ended the airport was ready for commercial use by many of the new airlines of Europe and North America. On the 16th of September 1945 the first transatlantic flight landed at Shannon Airport from New York City. In the following months the first scheduled commercial flight took place as an American Overseas Airline passed through Shannon Airport on its way to Europe.
In the following years the number of transatlantic flights rose sharply as Shannon Airport became known as the gateway between Europe and the Americas. The limited aircraft range meant that Shannon was the perfect point for the refuelling of aircrafts making long journeys from mainland Europe to the Americas and vice versa.
Over the course of decades airlines from around the world decided to set up routes connecting Shannon Airport to the outer regions of Europe and multiple airports in major American cities.
Attractions in the South West of Ireland
Once you’ve arrived at Shannon Airport you’re within reach of some of the best attractions in the whole of Ireland.
The Cliffs of Moher are an hour’s drive away and are recognised as one of, if not, the best attractions in Ireland. These cliffs rise to over 200 metres and stretch for over 8 kilometres above the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean offering spectacular views of the Atlantic as well as the famous Aran Islands lying off Galway bay.
The Burren is about 40 minutes from the airport and is a must see if you’re in the area. This unique karst landscape stretches out over 96 square miles of rolling limestone hills, criss-crossed with cracks full of floral species including arctic, Mediterranean and alpine varieties. The area is circled by many small villages each offering a truly rural Irish experience as well as plentiful accommodation and things to do.
The close by village of Bunratty offers visitors the chance to enjoy and experience the 15th Century Bunratty Castle and 19th Century Bunratty Folk Park. The castle itself is the most complete and authentic medieval fortress in Ireland and today is furnished with genuine articles of history interest dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. The folk park allows people the opportunity to explore what village life would have been like during the 19th Century. The village comes complete with a school, doctor’s office, post office, shops and a bar.
Shannon Airport’s location also gives you easy access to the counties of Cork, Kerry and Galway where you’ll find a variety of attractions and cultural experiences.
The Wild Atlantic Way
The Wild Atlantic Way is a newly opened driving route that starts at Ireland’s southernmost point in County Cork and stretches to the northern heights of Donegal. The route is the longest defined coastal route in the world and passes through some of the best attractions Ireland has to offer while travelling through a constant flow of majestic natural beauty.
