Sligo Tourist Information
Sligo and its surrounding land are well-known for its connection to Irish folklore, as well as beautiful countryside that became the inspiration of Nobel laureate - W. B. Yeats.
These days, the land is still very well known for the mystical burial sites and ancient structures that still stand proud around the town, as well as its strong ties to traditional Irish Music. Aside from Yeats, Dracula creator Bram Stoker is speculated to have been born in Sligo, as was the father of comedian and writer Spike Milligan. In 1998, the boy band Westlife was formed in the town.
Ireland’s largest urban settlement in the north-west, the area has been in constant use since well before the bronze age. The natural harbour was a trading point for Greek, Phoenician, and Roman ships and the location was marked as Nagnata by Ptolemy, as he mapped out the Roman Empire in the 2nd century AD. A few hundred years later came a Columban monastery at Drumcliff, before a bridge and castle in the 12th and 13th centuries.
There are music festivals year-round, catering to many tastes, and the riverside is known to have a vibrant and lively nightlife. Mullaghmore Head, to the north west of Sligo town, is regarded as one of the world’s best big wave surfing spots.
Wild Atlantic WayThe Wild Atlantic Way is a newly opened driving route that starts at Ireland's southernmost point in County Cork and stretches to the northern regions of Donegal. The route is the longest defined coastal route in the world and passes through some of the best attractions Ireland has to offer while travelling through a constant flow of majestic natural beauty. As the route runs through Co. Sligo on the way to Co. Donegal, it hugs the cliff top roads and offers some awe-inspiring views over Mullaghmore.
