Seeing Wexford

Founded by the Vikings, Wexford Town boasts an abundance of historical landmarks and artefacts, as does the entirety of county Wexford. So, unless you have unlimited time, it might be a struggle to take it all in.

And that’s before taking the stunning coastline into account. And, for that matter, the lively towns, cultural and social venues, parks, reserves, golf courses, and architecture, much of which dates back to the 12th century.

To perhaps make the decision a little easier, here are 5 of our favourite destinations in Wexford.

Selskar Abbey

Conveniently close to our location in Wexford Town stand the remnants of the storied Selskar Abbey (also known as the Priory of St. Peter and St. Paul), which was established by Alexander de la Roche in 1190. On the same site, prior to the abbey’s construction, the first ever Anglo-Irish peace treaty was signed in 1169 by the one-time King of Leinster, Diarmait Mac Murchada.

Hook Lighthouse

Once in your vehicle, you can reach the world’s oldest operating lighthouse from Wexford Town in approximately 50 minutes – the scenery on the way is spectacular! Constructed on the orders of King William Marshall 800 years ago, Hook Lighthouse is located on the very edge of the Hook Peninsula, which was once a portal for the arriving Vikings, Normans and English.

There is also a heritage site, where the history of the lighthouse is chronicled, while guided tours are available seven days a week. You’ll rarely happen upon a more bracing, undiluted encounter with the Irish Sea.

Curracloe Beach

It’s with very good reason that a huge portion of Irish people who chose to enjoy a stay-cation opt for Wexford. Case in point, the preponderance of exquisite beaches. Curracloe Beach, which is a mere 15-minute drive from the location, is particularly spectacular and a regular recipient of Blue Flag Beach status. Its sheer vastness allows for an intimate experience or an interactive one with fellow beach-goers. Aside from the crisp waves, there is a labyrinth of sand dunes to explore and several hiking trails along the adjacent pine forests.

Fun Fact: Director Steven Spielberg chose the beach to film the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan.

The Irish National Heritage Park

Whoever said time travel was not yet possible had obviously never paid a visit to The Irish National Heritage Park. As soon as you step inside the park, modern life ceases to exist, and you are transported back 9,000 years.

An outdoor museum, following a brief audio-visual presentation there is a choice of an audio self-guided tour or a guided tour. Among many other recreated ancient constructs, stand a Neolithic farmstead, a Viking shipyard and Norman Castle. Activities include archery and an adventure playground. It’s just a 10-minute drive from the branch.

Kennedy Homestead

The Kennedy’s might well be the greatest political dynasty in American history but their journey began on a farm in New Ross, county Wexford. Indeed, JFK returned to the home of his great-grandfather Patrick during his presidential visit in 1963. Various guided tours are available, while the visitor centre - opened by JFK’s daughter Caroline in 2013 - is a trove of Kennedy memorabilia. A 45-minute drive from Wexford Town. advantages at Wexford offers the following benefits:
