Day trips and Drives from Cavan

Cavan day trips - Lake image

When you hire a car in Cavan town, you can explore much more than the county. There are several sites and towns worth visiting within relatively short distance of the town centre, and getting there and back in a day is simple with a vehicle on hand. The following are a sampling of day trips worth planning from Cavan:

Lough Oughter

Admittedly less than a daytrip, Lough Oughter is a beautiful network of lakes that can be reached in just a little more than 30 minutes’ drive from Cavan town centre. This complex of lakes creates countless islets, including a man made island on which the ruined Cloughoughter Castle stands.

Located less than an hour’s drive to the east in County Monaghan, Carrickmacross boasts a lovely collection of Georgian houses on its main street. This town has also become synonymous with fine, handmade lace, and many visitors come here explicitly to shop for lacy gifts and souvenirs. Local tours are offered on Saturdays at 11:00.

Situated near Lough Key at the foot of the Curlew Mountains, the town of Boyle can be reached by car in about 90 minutes via R201 and the N4. The town springs to life in July for the Boyle Arts Festival, but its prehistoric sites, Boyle Abbey and the King House Interpretive Centre make it worth a visit any time of year.
