City Square is a key shopping centre in Waterford. It plays host to more than 40 shops and serves as a primary retail outlet for the entire south-east. Driving in on the M9 and N25, follow the signs for Waterford and then take a right on Rice Bridge to reach City Square. You’ll pass the Quays and the Granville Hotel before turning onto Exchange Street, where the multi-storey car park is located.
There are several arts and crafts stores about town, particularly along Barronstrand Street and Broad Street. This is a great area to shop for souvenirs, as it deals in everything from artisanal cheeses to reading materials and fine glassware.
Of course, given the important role that crystal production has played in Waterford, it’s no surprise that visitors are eager to take home some finely cut glass of their own as a memento. The aforementioned Waterford Crystal Factory is the most popular place to make a purchase, if only because this outlet combines a retail centre with a museum-style exhibition. However, there are plenty of other excellent options for shoppers.
Penrose Crystal came on the scene in the 18th and went through a revival in the late 1970s. This is the preferred place to have crystal engraved in Waterford. Shoppers can browse the wares at the factory showroom on John Street. There’s also a Penrose retail outlet in City Square shopping centre.
Whether it’s fine dining or a casual bite to eat, Waterford has restaurants to suit. This part of the country is well-known for its seafood, particularly salmon, crab and mussels. The densest collection of restaurants and cafés is located along the Quay, including a few riverfront venues that are big on ambiance. Many local restaurants offer special ‘early bird’ menus throughout the week, so be sure to call ahead to see what’s available.
