Places to Park in Athlone
Drivers in Athlone have plenty of parking options, including street parking operated through the Pay and Display system and covered parking options. Parking is affordable (free in some cases), and usually includes options for disabled drivers and passengers.
Parking on the street is administered by Athlone Town Council and includes short- and long-term options. If this is your first time driving in Ireland, the Pay and Display system is easy to get the hang of. Parking spaces are categorised into zones A and B. In all Zone A spaces, charges are incurred in 20-minute increments until the first hour, after which an hourly rate prevails. Vehicles may remain in one place for no more than two hours.
Zone B parking spaces are set aside for long-term parking, and an hourly rate prevails. The maximum daily fee is equal four hours’ parking. Pay and display machines will be on hand in all of these areas. You pay for your parking in advanced, and the machine will issue a receipt that is displayed inside the car under the windscreen.
Parking enforces patrol that streets to ensure that drivers are parking in compliance with the system. In most cases, a few minutes’ grace period is in effect to give you a chance to purchase a new ticket. Check the Athlone city website for a full and up-to-date list of public parking rates and locations.
Private parking facilities are also found around the city. An uncovered car park on Bastion Street offers hourly and daily rates, as do several facilities in the Irishtown neighbourhood. You can also leave your car in covered parking spaces at the Athlone Town centre shopping centre, which provides hourly and daily facilities.
