Waterford Tourist Information

Waterford was founded in the 9th century by Viking traders, and it's officially the oldest city in Ireland. The Vikings built fortifications here on the River Suir and held their position for a few centuries. The original Viking settlement was more or less lost to history, though recent excavations have unearthed troves of artefacts to fill the Waterford Treasures museums.

English forces arrived under King Henry II in the 12th century. Not long after, Waterford was named a Royal City alongside Dublin. Crystal production began in the 18th century, though it wasn't until much more recently that Waterford Crystal really took the world stage. Waterford's role has changed since its days as an 18th-century boomtown.

Today Waterford is a vibrant city that's home to a large college whose students bring a great buzz to their medieval surroundings. You'll find a buzzing nightlife throughout the week in the many pubs and clubs as well as a fantastic culinary scene consisting of some of the top restaurants in the country.

Tourist Attractions

Waterford is the fifth-largest city in Ireland. There's plenty to see and enjoy here. The city's trio of cutting-edge museums gets better every year, and a short drive through the countryside delivers visitors to a spectacular UNESCO Geopark and several prehistoric sites.

Waterford Treasures are a set of 3 museums located in the famous Viking Triangle in the city centre which cover the vast history of Ireland's first city. The massive stone fortress Reginald’s Tower houses Waterford's Viking Treasures. The Medieval Museum, the only one of its kind in Ireland, showcases spectacular treasures from the Middle Ages. The elegant 1743 Bishop's Palace is the home of the Treasures of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. These museums are all within a few paces of each other and are a highlight of this beautiful city.

The Copper Coast is a coastal region named so due to its mining history and it's here you'll find the Unesco Geopark. The area was declared a European Geopark in 2001 and a Global Geopark in 2004 due to the records of Palaeozoic volcanism and the last ice age. It's a beautiful rural region that offers stunning coastal views.

Waterford Crystal is a globally recognised brand that has produced some of the finest glass and crystal ware in the entire world. Their facilities, located in the heart of the city centre, offer guided tours that bring you through the entire production process and offer a chance to see these highly skilled craftsmen at work.
